Antony Gormley’s Inhabitable Sculpture Revealed at the Beaumont

Room, by internationally celebrated artist Antony Gormley, a giant crouching figure on the façade of London’s new Beaumont Hotel, the interior of which is a hotel suite, was unveiled at a press preview today in the presence of the artist.

Antony Gormley said: "I take the body as our primary habitat. ROOM contrasts a visible exterior of a body formed from large rectangular masses with an inner experience. The interior of ROOM is only 4 metres square but 10 metres high: close at body level, but lofty and open above. Shutters over the window provide total blackout and very subliminal levels of light allow me to sculpt darkness itself. My ambition for this work is that it should confront the monumental with the most personal, intimate experience."

Antony Gormley, born in London in 1950, is widely acclaimed for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space. His work has developed the potential opened up by sculpture in the 1970s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human being stands in relation to nature and the cosmos. He continually tries to identify the space of art as a place of becoming in which new behaviours, thoughts and feelings can arise. Gormley's work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and internationally. His many successful projects include the Angel of the North (1995-1998) and One & Other (2009) for the Fourth Plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994, and was knighted in the New Year's Honours list in 2014.

The Beaumont, in Brown Hart Gardens, Mayfair, is being developed by Grosvenor in partnership with Corbin & King Hotels. It is the first hotel that renowned restaurateurs Chris Corbin and Jeremy King will operate and it will open in Autumn 2014. Press Release

Porto Montenegro's First Hotel Enjoys a Grand Opening

The Regent Porto Montenegro designed by ReardonSmith Architects and ReardonSmith Landscape has now opened its doors. The first hotel in this glamorous new marina destination, whose original masterplan was also created by ReardonSmith, it is Regent’s second property in Europe and its seventh worldwide. Designed with a style inspired by the exquisite houses that grace the region’s beautiful Adriatic coastline, the building’s architecture also responds to the classical manner of the grand palazzos of the Italian lakes. While the hotel’s scale and style is imposing amongst its smaller neighbours, the relationship with them is also clear. All the buildings are clad in Montenegrin stone and render and are topped with terracotta roof tiles; the arched colonnade that wraps around the hotel is typical in the region and provides shaded areas in the summer months as well as protection during the rainy season. ReardonSmith dubbed Charity Boat Race Winners

ReardonSmith Architects were named champions of the 2017 Dockland Sailing and Watersports Centre (DSWC) Charity Dragon Boat Challenge on 18th August, finishing before the other 14 teams, contributing to the £5,000 raised for the DSWC Youth Programme, and winning the crown for “Best Costume Team” with their “Drag-On” attire.

Novice paddlers, team Sea Horse from ReardonSmith, finished the 0.2KM course with a race time of 01.17.67, and were selected for the best costume award alongside our other colourful team, Dirty Little Oars.

The aim of the charity is to provide water activities in Sailing, Windsurfing, Kayaking and Canoeing to children living in the East London area. Watersports have the ability to make a difference to participants, giving them valuable life skills such as confidence, self-reliance, independence, teamwork, responsibility, reliability and getting on with others. With Tower Hamlets and East London being one of the most deprived areas in the UK, and having the highest level of child poverty, many children cannot afford such activities. The DSWC Youth Programme offers children from disadvantaged backgrounds opportunities that they would never have been able to afford, and we at ReardonSmith are delighted to have been part of such a wonderful, fun and worthwhile event.

ReardonSmith Architects Designs Corbin + King’s First Hotel, The Beaumont Opens

The Beaumont hotel designed by ReardonSmith Architects has now opened. For this first hotel from esteemed restaurateurs Jeremy King and Chris Corbin, the architects have transformed an Art Deco era garage in London’s Mayfair into an intimate destination redolent with the style of a fine and very comfortable 1920s establishment.

ReardonSmith’s collaboration with Jeremy King and Chris Corbin extends back over a number of years, initially, assisting the partners in their search for a suitable London property. Then in 2008, Grosvenor approached Corbin & King to participate in a limited competition for the development into a hotel of the then Avis Rent-A-Car garage, originally built in 1926, and the project was born. At this early stage, it was fundamental in the thinking of all parties concerned that public art should be an integral part of the building and this became a key principle of the ReardonSmith scheme which won the competition. Following further discussions, Antony Gormley was commissioned to create an inhabitable sculpture which will be open to the public on certain designated days each year.

“It has been an absolute joy to work with Corbin & King, our client Grosvenor who was the developer and Antony Gormley in what has been a very creative process for both the designers and the architects,” says Patrick Reardon, Executive Chairman of ReardonSmith Architects. “We all shared a single vision and brought our individual skills and experience to the task of realising this vision. I think the result is a unique and timeless hotel as well as a truly exciting new landmark in Mayfair.” Press Release
