Successful Simplexity For 2014 Sleep Set

Conrad Smith joined by Belmond’s Katherine Blaisdell and yoo Hotels’ Marco Nijoff in judging the Sleep Set

The Sleep Set challenges competing design companies and their contractors to create the most inspired hotel guestroom, edging conceptual thinking forward and daring to challenge industry assumptions. This year, recent newcomer to hospitality, SKM Design, triumphed with its concept for a new “Hotel Simplexity” brand. Based in Leicester and founded just five years ago, SKM Design has already built a reputation for outstanding and thought-provoking architectural and interior design concepts. By confronting preconceptions of a “typical” hotel room, SKM questioned conventional approaches to the hospitality sector with a Sleep Set design that referenced intriguing inspirations from Sir Isaac Newton to Pink Floyd and the iconic 1980s sci-fi film Tron. “We came to Sleep last year and a contestant told us their business had a new lease of life after participating [in Sleep Set] so we decided to go for it this year,” explains Sanjay Mistry, Managing Director of SKM Design. “Recognition by Sleep has made a huge difference. We’ve met designers, architects and people from different hotel chains. We’re hoping to do a lot more hotel projects now!”

During a Sleep conference session, competitors Nigel Coates Studio, NoChintz, Dreimeta and SKM Design presented their concepts to judges Katherine Blaisdell, Vice President of Technical Services at Belmond, Marco Nijhof, CEO of yoo Hotels and Conrad Smith of ReardonSmith Architects.  The designers explained to the large audience their very distinct and imaginative responses to this year’s brief of creating a guestroom blueprint for a new hotel brand whose core value is “simplexity”: an emerging theory that considers why simple things have become so complex. Each entrant explored how hotel interior design can reverse this trend to create more harmonious and intuitive experiences.
